Early on, the Ursel Brook proved quite suitable for milling purposes. The earliest mills and water-driven facilities (such as forging hammers) set up along the Ursel Brook most probably date back to the 14th century and formed the basis for the ensuing economic prosperity in Oberursel.

Consequently, as the sovereign's tax revenues increased, Eberhard von Eppstein appealed to the emperor that he might grant town charter to Ursel, which he did in 1444. In 1448, 13 mills were recorded within the town:

4 felting mills, 2 oil-pressing mills, 2 grinding mills, 3 tool-sharpening mills und 2 tanning mills.

Over the centuries, the various mills and water-driven facilities were constantly adapted to the ever-changing market requirements. A copper forging hammer was, for example, first turned into a stick factory and later into an electro-technical factory. Two mills still generate electricity today.

The Mühlenwanderweg (a walking route to former mill sites) takes you along the Ursel Brook and its mill races. Information boards on the way tell you more about nature and industrial history in Oberursel.
